Fellowship Reformed Church

A Story About Community: Reflections from Martin and Carol DeVries

We initially joined Fellowship Church because we were eager to become involved in a smaller family church.  Our previous church experiences were more rewarding in smaller congregations.  However, God blessed Fellowship with lots of growth, and it soon grew so large it lost that small family feel.

While we celebrated Fellowship’s growth, we also knew that this would require us to be intentional about finding ways to experience deeper community.  Pastor Ken Eriks encouraged the development of something called “cell groups.”  Essentially this created the small church closeness in a large church.  Most cell groups met in homes and consisted of food, worship, a time of study and sharing, and prayer.  Each group could study whatever it chose, and we chose to discuss the sermon from each Sunday.  The goal was not to roast our pastors but to apply the message to our daily lives. We also made space to share what was on our hearts and other concerns and joys, and then prayed for each other.

Eventually, at the suggestion of one of our group members, we changed the name of our cell group to a “LIFE group” (Living In Faith Every day).  LIFE is what truly happens in our gatherings.  Truly we have grown close to each other and we are committed to supporting and encouraging one another.
We have experienced the love of this group (and the larger community of Fellowship) so many times.  Going through quadruple bypass surgery (Martin) was just one of those occasions where the love and prayers of our LIFE group was extremely comforting for our whole family.  We have had concerns for our children and grandchildren, and it is gratifying to know that we have a place to share these concerns with others who will commit to praying with us and for us.

There are many opportunities at Fellowship to get connected in community (things like Kids Hope, Sunday School, Youth groups, consistory, yard cleanups, breakfast groups, small groups, etc.).  So we would strongly encourage you to get involved! And when you do, we promise you will grow personally and in our church family.
